Story of my heart pure fiction challenge
Hands down, Rose Petal is my favorite Micro Flash Fiction. I wrote it with the motivation to compose an intricate story of only 100 words. Much of what I’ve read in this genre felt kind of ‘light’ — not that it’s not entertaining — but I accepted my own challenge to put some substance into so tiny a story.
I thought for some time, looking for the right tale, nothing came to me until a kid riding a bike reminded me of a good friend from childhood.
His name was Bill. Eleven years old. I called him ‘Silly Willie’ because he didn’t know how to play outdoors like normal kids.
That was his mom’s fault. She wouldn’t let him step outside their yard. Study. Study. Study. That was Silly’s life. One example of his confinement might explain why this particular entry came to mind.
One day, his parents bought Silly his first bicycle — a nice Schwinn too, with headlights — which he wouldn’t need. Mom wouldn’t let him ride it outside the yard, much less at night. Their home stood on a soft hillside. Silly learned to ride it by cruising downhill, no pedaling, and crashing into their chainlink fence. He’d then walk it back up.
Geez.
This story is a tribute to my friend. One day, I’ll have you know, Silly became Bill.
